March Birthstone – Aquamarine

If you are lucky enough to have a Birthday in March then the stunning Aquamarine is your Birthstone.   Its name comes from the Latin for water “Aqua” and “Mare” for the sea.

Its connection to the sea has meant that over the years many superstitions have been linked to this beautiful gemstone.  Sailors carried it with them as it was thought to prevent shipwreck, and protect against harm.   Gods of the sea were sometimes carved into gem, and it’s said that the stones come from the treasure chests of mermaids.

Aquamarine is durable, easy to cut and work with, and can often be found cut into a variety of shapes and sizes.  The most popular is the “Step” cut stone rectangular in shape with several faces cut in to create light and reflections.   A quality stone should be free from inclusions and appear a clear blue colour.  Some less quality stones may have tinges of yellow, grey or green, but these can be removed with heat treatment.

The colour suits most skin tones and works well with silver, yellow, white or rose gold.   We have set stunning Aquamarine stones with “Brilliant, Step and Cabochon” cuts in the past.  It’s a particularly popular gemstones around Mother’s Day as it personalises any gift given in March.

Most Aquamarine stones are found in southeast Brazil who’s mines produce a characteristic with inclusions that are distinctive to that area.  Stones have also been found in China, Kenya, Afghanistan, Mozambique, Russia and the USA.

If you would like to create something extra special for your mum this Mothers day (30th March) then an exquisite Aquamarine gemstone would make a wonderful gift.  We can make necklaces, earrings, bracelets or a beautiful sparkly ring.  The choices are endless.  If you would like more information on our bespoke commissions please don't hesitate to get in touch on kirsty@kirstytaylorjewellery.com or call us in Corbridge, Northumberland on 01434 633000.
