In February we turn all romantic with Valentine's day pinks, reds and purples.  For those lucky people with a Birthday in February the beautiful Amethyst is their birthstone.  It is known as the colour or royalty and is present in the British crown jewels and royal collections from ancient Egypt.

Amethyst is a variety of Quartz and it sets the standard for all purple gemstones.  It's name derives from the Greek word for "Amethustos" which means "Sober," and it explains why at that time wine goblets were sometimes made of the gemstone.

Experts can identify where the Amethyst originated purely on a visual inspection.  Amethyst from Eastern Mexico tend to be pale and some are "Phantomed" with clear quartz on the inside and purple on the outside.  While gems from Southwest-central Mexico are "Phantomed" the other way around.  These are thought to be some of the most valuable Amethyst gemstones.

They have a tough tenacity the same as quartz so jewelers like to work with them as there is less chance of the stone fracturing or braking. The gems can be cut into bead, brilliant, baguette and mixed cuts and are sometimes set with sapphires and diamonds for that extra sparkle.  Today most Amethysts come from Western India, Southern Brazil, Southwest Sri Lanka and Africa.

The highest grade Amethyst is called a "Deep Russian."  Their value depends on the demands of collectors but they are thought to be exceptionally rare and extremely valuable when found.

We have beautiful Amethyst stacking rings, fabulous Amethyst necklaces, bracelets and earrings.  We also have little Amethyst charms that can be put onto your jewellery to personalise your pieces.
